About this deal

Like flashling, I’m not thrilled by the imprecise use of “hearts” in 4dn — I would expect that to mean the centermost parts of the words, leading to UNHIG. The answer to this is DECAMETRE (defined by `11 yards’) and clearly intended to be a soundalike (homophone) for DECK A METER (Adorn a device for measuring…). They’re not as challenging as Azed, but I always like to tackle the Everyman puzzle as a sort of warm-up exercise before doing that one.

I thought perhaps he LUSTed OVER RAG (matches all the crossers) but didn’t see how that went with blowing a fuse. As always, when I’m blogging at least, a carefully constructed puzzle which should entertain and in places stretch the less experienced solver and provide a diversion for those who’ve been doing the puzzle for decades and have moved on to more challenging cruciverbal contests. The phrase is used in legalese to mean 'the reasonable person', and has gone into the language to mean 'the man in the street', a modern Everyman. This small piece of kit is designed to make building your Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle question more effective.I have been entering this competition for almost 20 years with decidedly modest success, though I did reach the dizzy heights of 15th place in 2010/11. In case you’re wondering the reason it gives Cardiff as my address is that (a) I still have a house there and (b) I’ve had some problems with things being delivered to Ireland from the UK and (c) I recently found a stash of sticky address labels with the Cardiff address on which saves the hassle of writing my address out on each entry.

Sunday 21st January 2024: 'Theatrical farce no one gets rid of (though second character cut) (6,3)'. Where I take issue with Everyman is in his use of question marks: he doesn’t always use them when he should, and he sometimes uses them pointlessly. I actually knew LESOTHO is a monarchy, so that went in easily and parsed UNHINGED the same way as KVa, after squinting at it several times. Everyman 4027 6D (4,3) Languish with idiot having assembled something for pasta sauce : -I-E / -U- 15D Not finishing various starters of Italian endivea, dressed like some tomatoes (3,5)S-N/-R-E- thanks in.TOFU doesn’t taste of anything much and only really becomes edible with drying out and lots of flavouring. I stopped for a while when I was at Sussex, as I switched to the Independent whose prize crossword yielded a steady stream of dictionaries. Some of Britain's top crossword compilers have set for the series under the Everyman name, not least the current setter, who has been challenging the nation for more than ten years.

That’s not enough to merit a prize but at least gets me on the scoreboard for this year’s competition. It is interesting though, that the most proficient solvers of cryptic crosswords, according to a study done by a UK University, (which was posted on 225 years ago and I can’t remember now), are people with science and technology backgrounds. It seems the Observer had to find a crossword setter at short notice, which is some kind of excuse for the offering above, but it’s still the worst crossword puzzle I’ve ever seen in a supposedly quality newspaper. I found this difficult – it took me more than double what I normally reckon to take on a more challenging Everyman and twice my time for Boatman’s prize, which I completed straight after! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The Crossword Solver is designed to help users to find the missing answers to their crossword puzzles. Down clues were `normal’, which helped a lot in providing checked lights to help in solving the trickier across clues. After seeing your description of this puzzle, I went and did it and also went back to try some previous Everymans. This satisfying new collection, published as the crossword celebrates its 80th anniversary, gathers together 100 of the best puzzles in the series. All the Across solutions consisted of two words with one or more letters in common entered in such a way that the two words run into each other. I resumed in 2017 but have found it difficult to get back into the swing of writing clues (at which I’ve never really been very good anyway). It should make finding your question easier for others and, the easier it is to find, the more likely someone is to answer it! Spine lightly rubbed at ends and edges, small black mark to front (possibly ink); pages lightly tanned, binding sound.
