About this deal

The blog was originally intended for posts about local politics, but evolved to offer cheap recipes suitable for people on a low budget. This afternoon one of my readers got in touch via Twitter to ask me how to make these cookies vegan, for a friend. A few weeks ago, I was reading my old copy of Camellia Panjabi’s 50 Great Curries of India like a novel, as I so often do with cookery books.

I’m doing my bit to encourage people to try vegan by making vegan food affordable and accessible and absolutely delicious. Hot off the back of my Beetballs, I was looking for new and exciting ways to use my new favourite purple vegetable, and so threw it into a morning juice. Some dried noodles contain egg, so flip the packet over in the supermarket and check the ingredients. But once you've used up all your favourite go-to recipes, it can be easy to slip back into old meat-eating habits, especially as the mundanity of everyday eating creeps in.

I understood myself: the discomfort, the guilt, the addiction, the naughty thrill of a packet of bacon in the fridge, the promises to myself that it would be the last time. I sometimes add cooked chickpeas to mine for a simple, flavoursome supper, or toss it through pasta with fresh mint for an easy lunch.

Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. Some vegan friends (and online groups) try to stop their friends from eating animal products by sharing gory photographs and videos online. The idea of putting bread in stew is one that dates back hundreds of years, to a medieval broth known as ‘caudle’.

Snuggled next to such exoticisms as ancho chillies, dried porcini mushrooms, and other things that it is ‘nice to have but not essential’ (although Waitrose now feature artichoke hearts in their Essentials range, for the love of God! In March 2022, Monroe complained that due to inflation poor people could not afford food, fuel and rent, and were having to go without food or fuel, or were eating unhealthily because they could not afford healthy food.

In the 2017 United Kingdom general election, Monroe intended to stand in Southend West as a candidate for the National Health Action Party, [48] but withdrew after receiving death threats and because of health problems. Bagged salad is one of the most wasted foods in Britain, with over half of it ending up in landfill. The NHS worker said: ‘As a long-time vegetarian – now vegan and avid supporter of LMC since the early days I’m horrified to see you in a paid partnership with Jack Monroe. I prioritised a friendship over a chicken that was already baked in a pie, and I learned my lesson about warning people far in advance about my proclivities.
