Abdul Salam Kheir
oud and voice
A unique collaboration of world-class musicians from east and west: lute and chitarrone solos from 17th and 18th century Europe contrast with traditional Islamic song and solos for oud, the Arabic forerunner of the lute.
David Miller and Abdul Salam Kheir love sharing their music. They introduce and play pieces from their own culture – gems from the Renaissance and Baroque lute virtuosi, and haunting Arabic music spanning six centuries – and they join together for some exciting duets from Italy and Turkey.
This duo first performed together at the Worcester Festival in August 2005, followed by a recital in the Kilkenny International Festival. In 2006 they joined soprano Catherine Bott and percussionist Stephen Henderson in a concert tour promoted by The National Centre for Early Music. The programme, entitled Convivencia, explores Christian and Moorish music and poetry from medieval Spain. Later that year, they released the album Convivencia, which was highly acclaimed by the national press.
In 2009, they gave an entertaining and informative lunchtime recital at St George’s Bristol, followed by a highly successful children’s workshop with a class of 9-10 year-olds.
