About this deal

Keep all electrical equipment off the ground and be prepared to stop using electricity when conditions are damp. Many sites have the three-pin camping power system as we have in the UK, some sites offer only a two-pin power supply. Whether the site provides modern or a two-pin connection, there is always the possibility that the electrical supply will be wired differently (double-pole) where both live and neutral are disconnected with the switch, unlike most UK wiring where only the live wire is disconnected (single-pole). Mobile mains normally also have a clip for you to hang up within the tent, so that the power supply is up off the floor and out of the way, preventing not only damp but also a tripping hazard that could damage your equipment or cause an accident. I'm no expert in voltage and wattage, but I do have an EHU cable and have got to know what I can get away with.

A generator can be used to provide a 230V supply where a hook-up is not available, but this route is not without its drawbacks and safety issues. Normal electrical safety precautions are still vital as 230V is being generated, but there is the additional complication that a generator may not be compatible with a caravan supply system as the generator may not have an earthed supply as provided by a conventional hook-up.This means that an appliance will work, but live power will continue to flow to it even when it is switched off. How much power each camper uses, especially at busy times, will potentially affect all other campers on the site. The mounting holes are then blanked off by some caps so as to prevent inadvertent contact from the internal wiring. Generally the least expensive generators will be the noisiest units, but even the quietest generators used on a quiet tranquil site or at night can cause disturbance to your neighbours.

It's also important to get a low-wattage kettle, toaster and fan heater - not assume that you can take your household appliances with you. Home appliances can be power-hungry, and many are definitely not suitable for use on a campsite or a leisure battery. The cable is normally coloured orange so that it is visible and avoids being damaged by grass cutting and other activities on site. Adding a few little luxuries to your camping holiday could make all the difference to having a more comfortable and ultimately, a more enjoyable stay - so what are you waiting for? This may be something only the campsite owner can do, which may not be possible between 9 pm and 9 am, or there could even be a charge for resetting the electrics.

Used in the right way however, campers can benefit from mains electricity and, if they take the right precautions, they can do it safely. Make sure you hear the noise level for yourself before purchasing and consider how you'll avoid being very unpopular on the campsite.

If you purchase yourself an electrical supply cable, you'll be able to receive a normal A/C electrical supply just as you would at home (tents also require a mobile mains unit). Should you have indication of an earth problem – whether in Europe or in the UK – you should not use the hook-up supply. You need to ensure the total rated wattage (rated power) of equipment switched on at any one time is less than the power supplied to you. Only proviso being if you exceed the 10A EHU capacity the lead circuit breaker will not trip out before the EHU one does! The world of electric hook ups for tents, campervans, caravans and motorhomes can feel a bit daunting when you're faced with confusing electrical conversion tables for the first time.
